Badmiton

As a player and a coach I’ve often wondered how top flight players have generated such amazing power. It’s a combination of many factors including timing of the shot, getting behind the shuttle to hit it, body-weight transfer, string tension, conditioning/training and the athletes natural muscle fibre combinations to name but a few.

There is one key element missing that I believe plays a major role in the power played on a badminton court – the speed of the shuttle.

I began to analyse shuttle speeds further and it suddenly dawned on me, thinking back over the years and even to this day, we’re killing skill at club/league level, which in turn is having a negative effect on our players, both junior and senior.

By doing this, without even knowing what we’re doing, players both young and old are being robbed of the art of badminton and in the ability to take their skill to new heights. Let me explain.

The rules for testing a shuttle according to the official Laws of Badminton are as follows:

3. TESTING A SHUTTLE FOR SPEED
3.1 To test a shuttle, a player shall use a full underhand stroke which makes contact with the shuttle over the back boundary line. The shuttle shall be hit at an upward angle and in a direction
parallel to the side lines.
3.2 A shuttle of correct speed will land not less than 530 mm and not more than 990 mm short of
the other back boundary line.

When I grew up as a player, I was always taught that the shuttle should land around 15cm either side of the back doubles service line. Whilst this is more or less correct, on many occasions we played with shuttles which landed 30cm short of the back doubles line and all the players accepted the shuttle as good. As a young player not knowing the rules I came to accept this practice as the norm. I had no idea at the time that I was being subjected to systemised de-skilling.

If you read section 3.2 again, the rule is very clear – that the shuttle should land between 99cm and 53cm short of the back line. This is NOT the doubles line as I was lead to believe, but the very back line of the court.

Thinking back, even to last season, I’m actually struggling to think of an occasion where we played with a shuttle that landed beyond the doubles service line. Every shuttle tested was short of the double service line by a considerable amount.

What Does All Of This Have To Do With Killing Skill Levels?

Think about all the effects of playing with a slow shuttle. First of all the simple task of hitting the shuttle to the back with a clear becomes more difficult. Only the very strong or consistently good players can do this frequently.

Let’s say that I’m a pretty good player but don’t quite have the same power capacity as a top player. A slow shuttle means I’m struggling to get a good length and have to work harder, or it can also mean that I have no chance of hitting any decent smash from the back line.

In this example, you may be thinking “well so what, tough luck.” OK, I hear you, but the speed of the shuttle is still having an effect on my skill levels. It means I do not get the same results as someone playing with correct speed shuttles. Let’s take this one step further…

The art of badminton is to play the shuttle around the court to outmanoeuvre your opponent. A huge part of badminton is keeping the shuttle in. A slow shuttle makes this easy compared to the correct pace of shuttle.

Time and again we see the pros hitting the shuttle out at the back having been put under pressure in a rally. Or, they fail on defence because the attack was just too good. Both these instances in league and club badminton are unfamiliar these days because we play with slow shuttles. OK, they do happen but there’s way more effort required.

So yes, we still hit the shuttle out at the back of the court, but I’ll wager that this would become more frequent if we played with the correct speed shuttles. The art of hitting the shuttle with just about the right amount of power will have to return, otherwise we’ll lose more points. I believe we’ve been so accustomed to playing with slow shuttles that these “touch” skills have eroded.

Let’s look at defending for a minute. In world badminton defences have got better and better over the years. This is partly down to racquet technology and also constant development of skill by the coaches and players.

In league play, we’ve all but lost this skill as we are not facing the same power levels – because the shuttle is too slow. So, we are not developing our skills to the same heights in order to control these returns.

And there lies the key to our downfall. Slower shuttles are actually reducing our ability to control the shuttle properly – we are merely returning it with a degree of control.

I’m not saying the skills don’t exist otherwise we wouldn’t be able to play half the shots we do, but I do believe that skill levels have diminished because of slow shuttles.

I’ll wager that if I showed up at most clubs with correct speed shuttles, I’d have complaints within minutes that the shuttles are too fast, with players losing points hand over fist because they cannot control the shuttle sufficiently to keep it in. The players wouldn’t like the power from their opponent that they cannot control although they’d be really impressed with their own power shots. And this is where the art and skills and have sadly diminished in our beloved game.

Elements of Song

When studying songs and songwriting, there seems to always be common threads to the basic components of successful songs. Like most people, I am measuring a songs success by it’s popularity more than any other factor, although it is not the only factor to consider. With that thought being set aside, lets look at the elements that make up songs in the Modern Contemporary Music era (the last fifty years of rock, pop, country and R&B). Please also note that these are not considered to be in any particular order.

1. Melody – The melody is the tune of the song that you sing or play. The best melodies are considered to be “catchy”. This typically means that the melody is memorable, which should be the desired effect.

2. Chords (chord progression) – The chords accompany the melody of the song. This can also be, and is typically, part of the rhythm of the song. A chord progression is the order in which the chords are played.

3. Beat and Rhythm – The beat of a song is what “drives” the listener to “feel” the song (fast or slow). It is also referred to as the tempo (speed) of the song. Because music stirs our emotions, we often are drawn to a song because of the beat. The rhythm on the other hand, is the beat that the various instruments (drums, bass, guitar and keys) create.

4. Genre and Style – the genre of a song (rock, pop, country or r&b) is typically established by the beat and rhythm of the song. The style may vary once the song is constructed with the words and/or instruments. The style of the song branches out from the genre, such as, punk rock, alternative, hip hop, blue grass etc.

5. Concept (story) – All songs have a story line or theme. Typically the song title will convey the essence of that story idea and the words (lyric) will expound upon that idea or theme. The story concept and theme is typically stated in the title of the song.

6. “Hook”- Simply stated, the hook is the part of the song that you just can’t get out of your head. It sort of “sticks” to your thought process, sometimes, even if you like it or not. All great (if not memorable) songs have great hooks. A song may also have sub hooks that are sections, words, phrases of music that will get inside your brain. The song title can typically be a “singable” hook or phrase as well.

7. Lyrics – What is being “said” in the song comes through the words called the lyrics. The lyric describes the concept, theme and/or title of the song. A lyric will typically rhyme in rhythmic phrases in the sections of music.

8. Song Sections – Songs are divided up into sections and have names, such as, intro, verse, chorus, bridge etc. Typically, the verse describes the concept of the title and hook that are typically in the chorus. Other sections such of music, such as the intro, bridge, lead breaks, etc., will function to support these main components of the song. Sections consist of measures (also called bars) that are typically four beats in length. Although they can be longer or shorter, sections are typically eight measures (bars) in length.

9. Arrangement – The arrangement is actually two-fold. First, the arrangement is the order in which the sections of music are placed, such as, intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus and so on. Secondly, the organization of the instrumentation, vocals and/or other parts of music that make up the song, are considered to be the arrangement as well.

10. Length – The length of a song is always a consideration, depending on the use of the song. If a song is being written and arranged for radio airplay, songs today are typically three and a half to four minutes long. They can be shorter or longer, but this is the typical length in today’s musical formats. It should be stated that you will find successful songs with less (or even more) of the ten elements that are listed here. That doesn’t make the song right or wrong, just different.

There are always exceptions to every rule, and in music, you will find that to be the case more often than not. In searching songs, I believe you will find most “hit’ songwriters will use proven formulas with the elements listed above, in some shape or form. I always remind songwriters and musicians alike, that there are no “have to be’s” in music, just “probablies.” That’s the purpose of using the word “typically” so often. As always, go back and study some of the songs from your favorite genre to see how many of the elements you can detect. I’m sure you will find that the more successful the song, the more song elements that are in the song. This should give you a great overview for your study. Happy Hunting!

Alnico Magnets

There are three main types of magnets – permanent, temporary and electromagnets. Of these three types, permanent magnets are the ones the average person is most familiar with. A good example of a common, everyday permanent magnet is a fridge magnet.

They are considered permanent because once they are magnetized they keep their level of magnetism. It is an object made from a material that is magnetized and it creates its own persistent magnetic field.

They can be created in almost every possible shape. A good magnet should produce a high magnetic field with a low mass. In addition, when you are looking for qualities of a good permanent magnet you want to ensure that it is stable against the influences that can demagnetize it.

There are a number of different types of these and each type has different characteristics and properties. What differentiates these includes:
• How easily they can be demagnetized
• How strong they are
• How their strength changes depending on the temperature

Types of alnico magnets include:
• Neodymium
• Samarium-cobalt
• Alnico
• Ceramic (also known as ferrite)

Neodymium and samarium-cobalt are classified as rare earth magnets. Rare earth magnets produce the largest magnetic flux with the smallest mass. These are known for being the strongest of all the permanent magnets and are difficult to demagnetize.

Alnico’s name is derived from its components. Alnico is made of aluminum, nickel and cobalt. This type is not easily affected by temperature, however it is easily demagnetized.

Finally, ceramic or ferrite magnets are perhaps the most popular type, mostly because of their flexibility. They are flexible and often thin, meaning that they can be bent and moved in a number of different ways, making them excellent choices for advertising and marketing purposes. They are fairly strong and not easily demagnetized, however their strength varies greatly according to the temperature.

The uses of permanent magnets vary greatly, including:

1. Mechanical applications rely on the attractive and repelling force of the magnet. Such applications include:
• Magnetic separators & holding devices
• Torque drives
• Bearing devices

2. Electrical energy applications rely on using the magnetic field to convert mechanical energy into electric energy. Such applications include:
• Generators and alternators
• Eddy current brakes

3. Mechanical energy applications rely on using the magnetic field to convert electrical energy to mechanical energy. Such applications include:
• Meters
• Motors
• Speakers
• Relays

4. Applications that are meant to direct, shape and control electron and ion beams. Such applications include:
• Ion Pumps
• Cyclotrons
• Cathode-ray tubes

Permanent magnets are the most commonly known and are used in a variety of products and environments. When choosing these you want to consider its strength, performance in temperature and whether it is easily demagnetized.

Body Jewelry

The idea of body jewelry has come a long way since the post modern preference for ear piercing on women. Today’s generation, believe it or not, much like ancient societies throughout history, have gone to the more extreme multiple piercing of various body parts.

If you ask around, you’ll get a lot of different opinions about body piercing, both pro and con. Many people use piercings to help express who they are and what they’re about, completely endorsing this type of adornment and what they endorse. However, you’ll also get people who are completely against body piercings and couldn’t imagine who in their right mind would allow something to be permanently placed through their skin. Although both sides seem to have valid points, the reality is that many of the piercing holes will close up as long as they’re not made too large.

Body piercing, the process of puncturing your skin in various locations and placing a metal jewelry adornment through the hole is a very ancient statement. Even today, many indigenous cultures practice body piercings for both adornment and as a status symbol. Though there has been a recent resurgence in native and tribal body piercings, most modern body piercings are done as purely a form of adornment.

So, should you get a body piercing? The answer varies greatly from person to person, but regardless of who you are there are a few things to consider. Answering these questions honestly and openly will help you realize whether or not body piercing is right for you. Are you particularly attached to a certain image that means something to you, or do you want to get a body piercing merely for the sake of getting a body piercing? Most people who are satisfied with their body piercings years on down the road are happy because they have made this decision not because of peer pressure but is something meaningful to them personally. Can you see yourself with the same body piercing when your seventy-five years old? It’ll probably still be there.

Since a body piercing is permanent, don’t just waltz into the nearest body piercing parlor, look at the flash in the case, and pick out something you like. Though this can be a good technique for getting ideas, there’s no rush to get it done immediately.

One final thought about body piercing is that it can cause some unexpected side effects. Do you think it will matter to your future significant other that you’ve pierced a certain part of your body? Understand that this decision “may” limit your choice of partners at least a little.

Next up on the unintended consequences list is that body piercing can dull the senses of the pierced body part. This may not be important today be understand that the decision is long term — lifetime — and losing sensitivity in private areas can be something that might be missed later in life.

Lastly, there’s the issue of loose stools. That’s right, we’re talking about leakage. A couple of piercings usually are not a problem but if you tend to go all out and get quite a few, the risk of anal leakage goes up with each piercing. The reason is that the metal from the piercings tend to leach into your body and increase the level of certain heavy metals. Nickel is especially prone to this effect and can cause leaking anal problems

Although the problems are something to consider, if the desire to have piercings for the right reasons continues to interest you, then take a deep breath and go for it.

If you have an image that you’re attached to, decide where you want it on your body. Most people who get body piercing ed, even those with large body piercings covering their arms, legs, or back, will avoid getting body piercings on their hands, neck, or face, due to the fact that many employers frown on body piercing and because body piercings which are always visible can make it tougher to get hired at certain jobs. Think of how visible you want your body piercing to be; should it be seen when you’re wearing short sleeves? What about shorts?

Finally, make sure you get body piercing ed at a respectable body piercing parlor. All of the needles should be sterile, as should the general working conditions. Be picky about your artist as well, view his or her portfolio and see a sketch of your design before getting inked, since you should be 100% happy with your body piercing.

Exciting googleplus

I am really excited by the release of googleplus.com and believe me it’s features are nevertheless stunning. Google Plus potential customers, software developers and, of course, opportunists and spammers to a very popular attraction.

I think that’s how it really applies to the Plus and Google to see if the app has been tested in the use of my Nexus S. Here’s to consider:

My jaw really dropped when I found out Mark Zuckerberg on facebook. Yup – the only users of the Google page that redirects to the applications of Plus! Kayak Fishing Hand Paddles

With prices of Kayak and Outdoor Equipment as expensive as they are, together with the fact that not all equipment is as personal as some would like, there are many who have turned to producing their own backpack and hiking equipment. Making your own equipment is fun and challenging, but in the end, the pride and satisfaction that results from using something that you did is inexplicable. Many people decided to make their own equipment, due to their dissatisfaction with products marketed more. Some do it for your own personal knowledge and a better understanding of how it works or should work. Ray Jardine, known to many as the father of the Ultralite backpacking, sell-it-yourself kits to do things like backpacks, knives, quilts, tents, hats and more bombers. Ray & his wife Jenny have been on many adventures around the world, and his knowledge of the outdoors has helped in developing their equipment making kits.

Brian Frankle Equipment Ula began soon after he ascended the mid-PCT. He was not satisfied with the options that the current marketed backpacks offered. Then he began to design their own packages. Hundreds of others followed in their footsteps and Ray Jardine. Not all who learn to make their own equipment to sell to the public, but that does not undermine their creative desires. Of course, some equipment is very difficult for the average person to build on their own. Ray & Jenny Jardine built their own kayaks for touring the oceans. Not everyone has time or money to spend on such projects. But there are plenty of small projects to combat. Many people have built their own stoves alcohol, also known as soda can stoves. Backpacks, tents, canvas tents, bags, materials song, hiking poles and snowshoes are small enough and not too demanding to do for someone who never made their own equipment.

If there is an option in a backpack or waist pack that you think would work great, but is not offered on all packages on the market, go ahead and design it! Talk with other hikers and backpackers. Go to some online forums where people discuss making gear and hear what others are saying. You may come up with something that others would benefit, possibly opening a new way to make money.
